How much does it cost to be an Expert?

It's free for freelancers and firms to sign up and use the Expert360 platform.

Am I qualified to join Expert360?

Freelancers and Firms on Expert360 have a proven track record of delivering excellent results for clients in their area of expertise. 
They typically have the following characteristics:

  • Strong skills and experience in a functional area
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly and bring their experience working with businesses, big and small
  • Aren't afraid to roll-up-their sleeves to get things done
  • Have a passion for driving great business outcomes

In addition, we look for:

  • Relevant professional qualifications 
  • Case studies and recommendations from clients
  • Industry awards
  • Published thought leadership material

You must have an ABN or ACN to sign up and work in Australia and once you engage to work on a project you will need relevant insurance coverage.
 

How should I determine my rates?

What if a client wants to re-engage me for ongoing support or another piece of project based work?

You will need to let us know if the project has been extended, or the client has engaged you for additional work within 12 months of the commencement of your original project. Please contact [email protected] Follow-on work within 12 months of your project's commencement is subject to Expert360's Pay Per Project fee which is payable by the Client.

Do I need an ABN?

Yes. We require all Experts working in Australia to have an ABN or ACN. If you are not entitled to one, please contact our team at [email protected].
Clients may also have a requirement for consultants to have an ACN, in those cases if you do not have an ACN please contact us to discuss your options.  
 

What insurance do I need as an independent freelancer?

From 4pm on 1 March 2019, when you contract with a client through Expert360 Marketplace and you are eligible (link), you will be covered for Professional Indemnity and Public & Products Liability Insurance for the duration of your project. This is at no direct cost to the Expert. Please see Insurance for more information.

Generally speaking, in Australia there are three types of insurance for which you should ensure you have the appropriate level of cover, and check with clients that this meets their expectations. The Expert360 policy may cover you for the below, or we can refer to you to networks of insurance brokers who are independent of Expert360 to assist you.

Professional Indemnity: Professional indemnity insurance is designed for professionals who provide advice or services to their customers. It protects your business against legal costs and claims by third parties for damages arising from acts, omissions or breaches of professional duty in the course of your business. Most large and medium companies require $5m in cover and public sector organisations generally require $10m in cover.

Public Liability: covers legal liability for claims arising out of personal injury or property damage as a result of an occurrence in connection your business activities. Most large and medium companies require $10m cover and public sector organisations generally requires $20m in cover.

Workers Compensation: This it to protect you if you get injured on a project at a client site. Freelancers and contractors have a legislative obligation to ensure they have workers compensation insurance in place where they operate as a Pty Ltd company. The exception is where you operate as a sole trader.

Can I make my Profile Private?

Yes, you have full control over how and when you appear on the platform. Manage your privacy from your account settings. If you choose to make your profile private which means you will not appear in search results and only the clients that you have directly connected with will be able to contact you.

Should my rate include GST, Insurance, third party costs, and other costs of doing business?

The rate you quote should be an all-inclusive hourly, day or fixed rate to cover any costs that are associated with doing work including insurance and other costs of doing business which you pay for yourself.  Rates quoted are excluding GST unless you otherwise specify.

How do I manage my expenses?

If there are expenses outside the agreed contract rate, this needs to be outlined in the contract upfront between you and the client.  When you invoice, include any expenses and keep all receipts.

If I need a visa, who pays for it?

You are responsible for ensuring all visa requirements are met, including costs.

How can I delete my Expert360 account?

You can request to have your account permanently deleted by contacting us at [email protected]

How often should I invoice?

Expert360 has a standard invoicing schedule, twice per month however some clients may request a different invoicing cadence which you can determine with them.  Please refer to our Pricing and Payments Procedures.
 

How and when am I paid?

Expert360 clients will either rely on the Expert360 platform or contract and pay you directly. 

If Expert360 is facilitating the payments between you and the Client, you need to invoice for your work on the Expert360 platform.  Standard payment terms are 10 business days but can vary by client; in both cases Expert360 will remit funds as soon as they are received from the client.

If you are invoicing and contracting directly with the client, you should negotiate payment terms and understand your client's accounts processes at the start. Payment days are normally set out in the contractor agreement.
 

What happens if I don’t get paid?

Expert360 only remits funds once they are received from the client, if there is a delay you can inquire with our accounts team: [email protected] who works directly with the client on collecting outstanding invoices.
